Video Blog - 05/12/11

Completed by: Myself

On 05/12/11 we decided to create a vlog to talk about what we were doing during our media lesson. We tried doing it in the lessson but we were too shy at first and it seemed un-natural and it wasn't very entertaining.

We tried again at lunch in the imacs suite and this went a lot better. We relaxed and we ended up with natural videos. The problem was that we couldn't stop laughing so we had to retake a lot of times.

It actually took us 21 tries to get a video we can use. 21 times. Kind of ridiculous right? But we had fun recording the vlogs and it taught us that we should be more confident and that we won't be able to do what we want to do right on the first go all the time, but that's okay because we'll get it right eventually.

Heres the vlog:

Animatics: part 2

Completed by: Myself

I was the only one in the group at the school so I completed most of the animatic. I changed all the photos we needed and converted them to JPEG and then imported them into Final Cut. I then arranged them all and cut down the sizes of some scenes. Then I created a "rolling title" and put this at the start of the video. I then put in video transitions.

The only problem was that some of the pictures we a lot smaller then other ones so. All thats left to do on the animatics is put in a soundtrack and sound effects.

Filming - Second day:

Completed by: Me

Today (Thursday1st December) was our second day of filming which we filmed the 'indoor (car port)' and 'shed' scene.

Location:

We filmed in Tayla's back garden which was where her car port and shed are.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Annie applied her make up and designed her hair similar to how Ellie Weeks designed Snow Whites hair last Thursday, however more natural.
  • We all did our part in setting up
  • Me and Tayla took photos for evidence
  • We also ensured we were aware of health and safety risks

Equipment used and who brought them:

  • Video camera - Tayla
  • Tri-pod - Tayla
  • camera to take photos for evidence - Tayla
  • Emergency phone numbers - All of us
  • story board - Nicola
  • Costume - Tayla and Nicola
  • Props: Nicola

Filming:
We went to Tayla's house at the end of lunch and set up whilst Annie changed and did her make up.We first began to get a MS shot of Snow White looking into the mirror which lasted for 6 seconds, which followed on with capturing an OTS of Snow White looking into the mirror lasting 5 seconds, however the audience can just see her reflection. This lead onto a LS of Snow White screaming in high pitch and throwing the mirror onto the floor which lasted 5 seconds. Then a CU of the smashed mirror which gradually zoomed in, lasting 9 seconds. After this we had finished this scene which we then trailed on and filmed a WS of my shed, slowing zooming into the window to a black out, last 10 seconds, however we did re-shoot this 3 times as because of the uneven ground, the came titled slightly.
Conclusion:
I think that it was another successful day of filming because we were lucky with the weather, Annie's acting was very good, the scenes we easy and enjoyable to film and we worked well as a group.
Here are some photos taken during filming process:

  • Filming - First day:

    Completed by: Myself

Thursday 24th November was our first day of filming. We filmed in the afternoon in the lane behind our school. We filmed for two hours to ensure we had enough scenes to edit and so that the scenes wouldnt have to be refilmed.

    Scenes we shot

We filmed all of the outdoor scenes like the finding of the apples and her running away scared.

    Film location

The film location was a wood lane behind our school. We had to change location because of transport issues and scheduling.

    Roles and Responsibilities:
    • Annie did most of her own make up and Nicola put the fake blood on her
    • Ellie Weeks designed Snow Whites Hair.
    • We each set up the scenery and took turns in filming.
    • We all ensured health and safety was followed

Equipment used and who bought them:
    • Video camera - Tayla
    • Tri-pod - Tayla
    • Camera to take photos for evidence - Nicola
    • 16 apples - Tayla and Nicola
    • hazard sign - Nicola
    • Refreshments - All of us
    • Emergency phone numbers - All of us
    • story board - Nicola
    • Make up - Me
    • Fake blood - All of us
    • Costume - Tayla and Nicola

Changes made during production:During filming we changed several scenes from the storyboard and we didnt include the knife as a prop as the health and safety risks were too much.

    Filming:
At lunch, we got Annie to put her costume on and then we helped with her make up and Ellie Weeks helped style her hair. We also did a check on our equipment to see if everything was working and that we had everything we needed. We thenwalked to the location which was the lane directly behind the school. We began filming at around 2pm.

When filming, we first began to get a LS/WS shot of Snow White running away from the camera, who kept looking behind in panic. This followed on from capturing a MS shot of Snow white running still looking behind, however, the camera was catching the side of her. Then, capturing a CU shot of Snow White's waist when running, followed by a 2 more ECU shots of her running, filming her feet and legs. This lead onto filming the 'hazard sign' shot which was HS and the shot where Snow White is laying on the floor. We decided to film these shots as soon as possible to maintain the same lighting. Although, we filmed various shots of Snow White running, so when it comes to the editing process, we had a more wide range of shots to choose from.

    Conclusion:
I think that the first day of filming was an overall success. We definitely chose the right actress as she not only was a good actress she also shared her drama knowledge with us and really helped to enhance the scenes. Ellie Weeks was also helpful as she too had many good ideas that helped us while filming. The shots looked successful as we filmed them, the lighting was how we wanted it and we all really put in our best effort for filming. I think it was sucessful production day and I look forward to the next one.

Here are some images Nicola had taken of filming process:

    Health and Safety on Tuesday

    Completed by: Myself

We will be filming in Tayla's shed and we should consider the following things:

    • Make sure we have some sort of first aid kit
    • Have emergency numbers
    • Ensure the floor is suitable for us and for the tripod to stand on
    • Be very careful with the camera and other equipment
    • Be aware of any trip hazards
    • Be careful where we put our drinks and try to avoid creating health risks

    Production Diary: 21/11/11

    Completed by: Myself (Indiviual Work)

    Monday 21st November

Today, we have tried to solve several issues we have been faced with, i.e:
    - Annie's availability
    - Storyboard disagreements

Annie has other after school commitments so trying to find dates and times that are available to all of us has been quite hard. We have agreed on tomorrow and Thursday but if for some reason she can't make it tomorrow, we will film scenes where she isn't required like the location scenes.

There was only a slight alteration to the storyboard: took out so many of the black screens as we felt there was too many of them.

    Preparation for tomorrow:
    - We have the costume ready
    - The props have all been made
    - Fake blood is being made fresh tonight by me
    - Back up plan for any problems
    - Storyboard is complete
    - Shot list is complete

Scenes needed and dates they will be filmed.

Scene 7: The film title – ‘The Black Apple’ will appear on the black background.

    Experimenting with animatics: part 1

    Completed by: Me

Today we scanned our storyboard into an imac computer and saved a copy of it. We then used PhotoShop to print screen every box then we edited each indiviual box. We used the paint tool and changed the opacity to colour in certain areas of the image to make it a stronger image.

The animatic is still in progress and we will update when we have completed more of the animatics.

    Final filming dates

    Completed by: Me

Thursday 24th November : We will be filming most of the scenes in Ashridge with Annie.

Tuesday 22nd November : Tayla will be filming one scene - her shed as she is the only one who is free during one of these days between me and Nicola

Making the hazard sign part 2:

    Completed work individually:
During our media lesson on 14th November, Tayla and Nicola decided they would finish off the hazard sign that Nicola started a week or so ago, below are the pictures of process of making it. The hazard sign is a prop that will be used during filming.

I helped with ideas and took the photos for them.

    Location scouting part 2:

    Taken from Nicolas blog

Tayla and I decided to go to our second chosen location to take some pictures of it to show where we will be filming. We have chosen the swimming changing rooms:

    Why?

    • Fits into the appearence of the room described in the film - isolated, dirty and old looking
    • Permission - we were given permission by one of the PE teachers to use the room for filming
    • No distraction - no school posters or tables lying around the room etc.
    When will we film this?
    • Next Tuesday after school
What is this location used for?
    • This location will be used for the "inside of the shed" as all of our Sheds have no room for filming in and this location looks like an inside of a shed if we edited the walls into a brownish colour
    Lighting in the room
    The door from the inside
    How the room looks like
Tayla standing at the angle/place where we will be filming in the room
With slightly more light - this is a shot when the door was opened on the right hand side to allow sunlight in
The sign - will be covered up for filming

    Outside of the location
The other location would Tayla's shed at her back garden: Why?
    • Fits into the descrition of the shed in our film
    • Tayla will be able to film there whenever she wants as its her shed
    • No distraction - no one interrupting or posters around
    When will we film this?
    • Friday 18th November 2011
What is this location used for?
    • The scene with the shed will be used for the scene where the camera will zoom into the window and looking through it seeing Snow White.

    Finalising costume:

    Taken from: Nicola's blog

Today Tayla and I brought in clothes for the costume which will be worn by Snow White. Because I couldn't find a red top, I brought in a red dress instead and we have decided to team that up with Tayla's white cardigan and now the costume has changed again to:
    • Red dress
    • White cardigan
    • Blue headband/flower
    • Black tights
    • Yellow or dark blue shoes
Below are the pictures of the costume that will be used for filmimg:

Caterina holding up the final outfit
    White cardigan
    Red dress
Why we have chosen this particular costume?
    • Fitted into the description of the overall look of Snow White - stereotypical colours that will allow the audience to recognise and ressemble the character with Disney Snow White.
    • This is an alternative of the stereotypical look of Snow White as this outfit looks mordern in contrast to the Disney Snow White. Additionally, this differs to the original princess outfit to connote to the audience that she isn't pure, and innocent like a stereotypical princess, allowing the audience to know she has a bad side to her.
    • The red on her dress will give a link to the apple, as the apple is red too - this will allow the audience to recognise a link between the two.
    • The red symbolises energy, power and blood which will connote across to the audience that she is confident and fiery, however, the white cardigan suggests innocence, purity and simplicity which is the opposite to the red. This will suggest to the audience she has two different personalities.
    • The ruffled part of the dress suggests a feminine Snow White
    When will we use this?
    • When we are filming - Annie will be wearing this costume
Overall, I am happy with the costume, and hopefully the filming will go well!

    Mondays Lesson - 14/11/11

    Work completed: individual work

    Evaluation success criteria:
    1) There is an understanding of the forms and conventions used in the productions.
    2) There is an understanding of the role and use of new media media in various stages of the production
    3) There is an understanding of the combination of main product and arcillary tasks
    4) There is an understanding of the significance of audience feedback
    5) There is skill in choice of form in which to present the evaluation
    6) There is ability to communicate
    7) There is the use of digital technology

I found this list to be really helpful as I wasn't sure before what I would have to put in my evaluation so now that I'm more aware and I can put all these things in and hopefully do a better job on my evaluation then I would have if we hadn't been given this list.

For the second half of the lesson, we watched, evaluated and marked a film opening from a previous student. We had to mark the work by saying if the section we were marking was poor, basic, proficient or excellent and then writing comments on how to improve such as: "Really good placing and timed credits" which is what I wrote about the video we watched first which was "Playful" after this we watched "The Invisible Boy" which was obviously at a lower standard so this really helped me to see what elements could make my work a higher standard.
